  • Sigiriya rock at dawn before the heat and the queue
  • Yala leopard safari with an early-entry permit
  • Galle fort on foot at sunset

A suggested shape

A starting point, not a fixed plan. Every day here can move, stretch or go.

  1. 1

    Colombo

Arrive, settle, and a city evening.

  2. 2

    Sigiriya and Dambulla

Rock fortress at dawn, cave temples after.

  3. 3–4

    Kandy

Temple of the Tooth, botanical gardens, then the train south.

  4. 5

    Ella

Nine Arch bridge, Little Adam's Peak.

  5. 6–7

    Yala and the coast

Safari, then across to Mirissa or Unawatuna.

  6. 8–9

    Galle

The fort, the ramparts, and back to Colombo.

Worth knowing before you commit

  • Reserved-class seats on the Kandy–Ella train sell out 4–6 weeks ahead. Unreserved means standing for 6 hours.
  • Sri Lanka has two monsoons: the south and west are best December–April, the east May–September.
  • An ETA is required for Indian nationals and is applied for online before travel.
  • Sigiriya is a 1,200-step climb with exposed metal stairways — Pidurangala opposite is shorter and has the better view of the rock itself.

Common questions

Is the train really necessary?

It is the single best thing on this itinerary and the car meets you at the other end, so it costs you nothing but time. Reserved seats must be booked weeks ahead.

One coast or both?

December to April, the south and west. May to September, the east. Trying to do both in one week means long drives for no gain.
